There is usually an inner logic to people's anxieties, even if they don't seem to make sense in their current context, and the experience of being negatively judged on an ongoing basis (along with perceiving onself as being powerless to change the experience) could certainly leave someone feeling that this was the norm rather than the exception.Eoin Stephenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10411355363083049551noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7801998760152556390.post-57725007740119754212010-06-24T11:19:21.251+01:002010-06-24T11:19:21.251+01:00Hi Eoin, Social Anxiety is an issue that present...Hi Eoin, Social Anxiety is an issue that presents itself quite a lot - I was wondering is this something that develops over time, could it be brought on by an negative experience within a group - for instance bullying within a group. I wonder if the trauma or impact of this negative experience could leave someone in a place where they could start to believe that all social situations will be the same and they may get to a stage where they don't expect anything to be different. Sometimes these bullying experiences can be so subtle and so manipulative that we can tend to doubt ourselves and maybe strongly identify with the list of criteria you mentioned above - feeling at some level that it is our own fault we have these symptoms and that we are not coping something is wrong with us and that we have to endure these awful feelings - so I could see CBT approach being very useful here particularly where we challenge the experiences and also start to pay attention to our experiences within other settings and how they may be different.
